Phone Bank for Equality!

Stand up and defend equality! This may be Equality Month, but the LGBT community is still under attack.

For example, in Maine’s election on November 3,  Question 1 will ask voters  to eliminate marriage rights for same-sex couples. This contest will come down to the wire,  and it’s one we can’t afford to lose.

Thankfully, there is something you can do. This Saturday, the Courage Campaign, Equality California, Cal Dems, and the San Francisco Democratic Party are hosting a phone bank on campus to make sure Maine votes NO on 1.

Volunteer to phone bank on Saturday and defend equality!*

From 12 to 4 in Eshleman Hall, we will call Maine’s citizens and tell them to vote NO on 1. We will tell them to reject the discrimination and bigotry which have pervaded our society, and denied equal rights for years.

Equality has strong momentum nationally, and we must make sure it continues. We can’t afford another Prop 8.

Sign up to phone bank for equality on Saturday!

Come for a few hours, a few minutes, or however long you can. But, please do come–Maine’s LGBT community needs your help.

Walkout Advocacy Letters

October 1, 2009 by Nik, under Blog, Home.

Our voice is clear: we must protect higher education in California.

At our meeting last Thursday, almost 100 Cal Dems signed letters urging their representatives to protect higher education in California.

You can view a copy of our letter here.

We told Sacramento to look for new revenues–including tobacco and oil severance fees–before squeezing students, faculty, and the future of our state. Our message was clear: we would rather have affordable education than affordable cigarettes.

This was a great first step, but it won’t be our last. Education is too important to fail.

September 29, 2009 by Nik, under Home.

Hey, Cal Dems! Next week, we’re turning in our health care petition to Senator Feinstein. So far, we have 450 signatures.

Help us get 500 by the end of this week! Download the petition, sign up your friends, and bring your completed sheets to the general meeting on Thursday. Remember, time is of the essence — our deadline is fast approaching.

You can download the petition here. Thanks so much!

Painting the Community Blue

September 19, 2009 by Lindsey, under Home.

Last Saturday, 22 Cal Dems members decided to spend part of their Saturday working with the organization, Rebuilding Together Albany.  We helped fix up the home of Ms. Giller, a ninty-six year old woman who lives in the Berkeley area about eight minutes from campus.  While the main task was to scrap off and safely discard the old lead-based paint that was used on her home and then repaint, we had a lot of fun talking and chatting through the painting, and lots of hilarity ensued. You should join us next time!

We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer, and are looking forward to energizing the Cal campus into some progressive action.

As a first step towards this, we’re having our first meeting of the semester! It’ll be in 219 Dwinelle at 7pm on this Thursday, September 3rd. We’ll have lots of new progressives, snacks to go around, and some good discussion to top it off. We hope you can make it!
