My most lovely Dems,
At the meeting tomorrow, we will be hearing from the candidates running for
the five elected executive offices, and voting on our 2008-2009 executive
board. If you are a Member in Good Standing, join us tomorrow at 7 pm in 56
Barrows to cast your ballot. If you are unsure of your standing, you can
email Sarah S. (sarah.stoller at caldems.com) to see if you've paid your dues
for the semester, and Molly G. (molly.green at caldems.com) to see if you've
attended half of the meetings. The candidate statements were sent out
earlier this week in the digest, but Ariel's statement did not make it in,
so it is reproduced below. The candidates are:
*President*: Sean Barry & Molly Brennan
*External Affairs VP*: Elliot Scales & Morgan Wallace
*Internal Affairs VP*: Ariel Boone, Kristin Hunziker, Andy Kelley, & Keith
Yetter
*Secretary*: Claire Viall
*Treasurer*: Daniel Osborn & Mia Pskowski
Before ending this message, my last email to you as Cal Dems President, I
just wanted to say what a blessing it has been to be able to serve you for
this past year, and to thank you all so much for making this experience so
wonderful. I had no idea what to expect coming in to this primary election
season, but with the help of an incredibly supportive board and a group of
the most positive, dedicated, and enthusiastic members I've ever met, we
were able to keep the club strong and help it thrive. In joking with past
president Scott Lucas a few weeks ago, he said that the sign of a successful
year is when the club doesn't fall apart. And, since we still exist, I'd say
it was a job well done, no? In all seriousness, though, it's been an amazing
ride; I've learned so much and met so many cool people, and honestly I don't
know what I'm going to do with myself next year. Again, this year wouldn't
have been what it was without all of you, so THANK YOU so much for
everything!
Democratically (and tearfully) yours,
Sarah Gold
President

*Candidate Statement for Ariel Boone:*
The defined duties of the Internal Vice President include
organizational tasks, such as coordinating tabling and ensuring that we
register for a meeting room. In an election year, however, the IVP's most
crucial role is increasing Cal Dems' formidable presence on campus.
To maintain increased membership and visibility, outreach to the
multicultural and progressive communities at Cal is key. From 2006-2007, I
was president of a Key Club with 112 paid members; I am familiar with having
to mobilize a large club. Additionally, having ties with the ASUC will
benefit the club, whether in widespread voter registration efforts, or
asking for money for convention. With my work in the Activism Right There
coalition, Cal Serve elections, and hosting an event for Peace Not Prejudice
Week, I see the potential of Cal Dems to be a legitimate
politically-motivating force at Berkeley this fall. After going to Tahoe
and the CDP convention, and after tabling on Sproul every week, I see that
Cal Dems can either be a final destination or a launching pad for young
Democrats.
So think of tabling on Sproul and registering the club in your decision
for IVP. But please also hold your chosen candidate responsible for
increasing diversity in Cal Dems, staying well-versed in ASUC affairs, and
having the vision to outreach to progressive communities at Cal. That's how
Cal Dems will grow in 2008.
