CAL DEMS EMAIL DIGEST for September 23, 2007

Hopefully all of you who joined us on Thursday enjoyed Prof. Zook’s talk
on music and politics…who knew that someone could figure out your politics
from looking at your ipod!  This week is promising to provide yet another
exciting Thursday evening meeting, so come out and join us…new members are
always welcome!

CAL DEMS ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-Thursday Meeting
The meeting this week (aptly titled “Campaign Booty Camp”) will focus both
on getting political internships and working on political campaigns.  Be
prepared to learn everything you could ever want to know about working for
and with politicians!

-Smart Ass
As hopefully all of you involved know, Smart Ass articles are due tomorrow
(the 24th)!  Get your stuff to Kali so we can again show up BCR in
providing the most snarky political reading on campus.

-PVC
Morgan wants y’all to start blogging!  If you’re interested in becoming
more involved in Cal Dems, writing for our blog, our helping out in
prepping for our debate against BCR, come to 115 Barrows on Wednesday
night at 7 pm and hang out with the cool PVC kids.

-Tahoe
The Tahoe trip is schedules for Nov. 9 and 10.  If you are interested in
going, please email Sarah G. at sarah at caldems.com ASAP.  The cost will be
$45 per person; you can lower that fee to $20 if you volunteer for 4 hours
at the retreat.  It’s looking to be a great time: you’ll get to get
together to plan for our efforts in 2008, network with our peers, get
trainings from experts in the field, hear the latest campaign updates and
how your chapter can get involved, meet lots of cool, young Dems from all
over CA, and get to hang out with your favorite Cal Dems in a gorgeous
setting.  Speakers include: Assembly Speaker, Lt. Governor John Garamendi,
Controller John Chiang, 2005's Democratic Gubernatorial candidates Phil
Angelides and Steve Westly, members of both the Assembly and the Senate,
and many more.

-Obama for President Downtown SF Meetup Tuesday September 25th

Meet San Francisco and local supporters of Barack Obama for President.
The featured speaker for this meet up is Tony West!
Tony is an attorney at Morison & Forster and a co-chairman of Obama's
California finance committee. Tony has a long history with many
Presidential campaigns and DNC efforts.

Tony will give a briefing on the Obama campaign from a California
and national perspective.

There have been many recent exciting campaign developments
Including; the Women for Obama event in San Francisco,
Oprah's fundraiser, Ben Harper's fundraiser, Warren Buffet's

National Conference will be held in Manchester, New Hampshire November

-Cal in Sacramento Platinum Fellowship

Want to intern in Sacramento this summer? Want free housing while you do
it? Then come to the Cal-in-Sac Info Meeting on September 24 at 7pm in the
IGS Library.

Applications can be picked up at 111 Moses Hall (in the IGS Library) or
online at: politics.berkeley.edu/CIS.  Applications for 2008 program are
due in 111 Moses Hall on October 12, 2007.

What is the Cal-in-Sacramento Platinum Fellowship?
We are one of the largest and most prestigious campus-based public service
fellowship programs.  We have sent over 500 Cal students to Sacramento to
experience politics, government, and public service.

Who’s eligible to apply?
Everyone! Any undergraduate in any major is encouraged to apply.  Past
successful fellows had strong writing and research skills, could
communicate complex message succinctly, and were able to build strong
networks during their fellowship.

What are the program requirements?
Fellows are required to take Political Science 110B, a two-unit course in the
spring.  This class is taught by a former legislator who provides students an
insight into the Sacramento political process.  There are also weekly guest
speakers.

Fellows then go to Sacramento for the eight weeks in the summer to work in a
politically oriented office.  We will give your guidance to choose
officers that will best suit you and give you the greatest opportunity to
apply the skills you have learned in class.

-Cal in the Capital

  Cal in the Capital (CITC) is currently accepting applications for the
summer of 2008.  Founded in 1965, CITC is a student-managed internship
program housed in the Cal Corps Public Service Center.  Every summer,
CITC sends dozens of Berkeley students to live and work in Washington,
DC .  Through the program, students explore their interests, enhance
their professional and leadership skills, learn about national issues
and current events, network with Cal alumni, and explore the dynamic
life of our nation’s capital.  Students who demonstrate interest in
public service and social change, regardless of their academic
concentration or year, are encouraged to apply.

-UCDC Program

An Application form for the Spring 2008 UC Berkeley Washington Program is now
available online, at: http://ucdc.berkeley.edu

Each Fall and Spring, the UCB Washington Program sends undergraduates to
Washington, D.C., to complete academic research projects of their own
design, and to participate in internships related to their research. The
Program is open to juniors and seniors in any major, and graduating
seniors may participate during their final semester at UCB (but not after
they actually graduate).

To apply, you must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and have junior or senior
standing in the semester you plan to attend. You must also have taken at
least two upper-division courses on the UC Berkeley campus, which provide
background for the topic you intend to research. Internships are available
in a wide variety of DC-based government agencies, nonprofit
organizations, policy think-tanks, media outlets, and businesses. Students
live in the brand new UC Washington Center at Scott Circle and UCB
financial aid is transferable to DC. Students earn a full semester of UCB
academic credit.

*Applications for the Spring 2008 UCDC Program are due Wednesday, October
3, 2007 at 4 p.m.*

Candidate interviews will be conducted in mid-October 2007 for the Spring
2008 UCDC Program. Accepted students will be notified in the 12th week of
class in the semester they apply.

-Law Student Positions Available

Spring and Summer 2008

Law Clerks have the unique opportunity to work in an exciting and
cutting-edge non-profit women's law firm. ERA has been fighting for
women's equality through litigation and advocacy for over 35 years.

Under the supervision of ERA attorneys, Law Clerks staff our Advice
and Counseling line. They interview callers and provide legal advice
regarding sex discrimination, sexual harassment, title IX enforcement,
family/medical leave, and other employment issues.

Law Clerks also assist with impact litigation and legislation through
research and writing assignments; attending court hearings,
depositions, and internal litigation strategy sessions; and working
with ERA lawyers on legislative advocacy.

Law clerks may also have the opportunity to present educational
workshops to community groups regarding sex discrimination and women's
rights.



Unpaid:     We offer academic credit
Hours:      School Semester:   16-20 hours per week
            Summer:  37.5 hours per week

--Internship for the Office of Sen. Diane Feinstein

Students interested in public service and the federal government are
encouraged to apply for an internship with the Office of U.S. Senator
Dianne Feinstein in San Francisco.

Working with the Senator's office gives students a chance to see how a
Senate office functions and provides a local perspective on assisting
constituents with varying issues involving the federal government.

Intern duties may include:
Handling constituent phone calls and requests, assisting with
correspondence, drafting constituent letters, conducting research,
attending community meetings, helping staff with advance work for events,
opening and sorting mail

-Barack Obama Campaign
Vote Hope, a progressive organization working to support Barack Obama in
California is looking for someone to fill the position of East Bay Student
Organizer.  The Organizer will be working with 5 different campuses (CSU
East Bay, Laney College, Merritt College, UC Berkeley and Contra Costa
College) to establish a campaign strategy on the respective campuses and
will be in charge of finding volunteers and working on voter registration
and mobilization on the campuses.  It is a part time position starting
