[Cal Dems] wonderful website wackiness

Hey all,
We have lots of website goodness to look forward to, and I'd like to get to
work on as much of it as possible before classes start! I may have forgotten
some things, but here's what's on my radar at the moment:
1) Welcome for new members: We want a welcoming message on the front page to
start off the year. What should this say/look like? A graphic? Some levity
from Marshall? I'm not very creative with these things :P.
2) Membership form: Right now we have a page (
http://www.caldems.com/signup.php) for listserv
subscriptions/unsubscriptions; this will include an optional "Name" field
once we switch to Mailman. We also have a membership page (
http://www.caldems.com/join.php) with text about why ppl should join and a
link to a printable membership form. I think it might be best to merge these
two pages, allowing ppl to register as a member and/or subscribe to the list
from one page. Do we need the "why you should join" text on the same page?
3) Full membership form: We've created the abbreviated membership form (to
be passed out at the table--check it out tomorrow at Calapalooza!). This
includes all info necessary for rechartering, plus email address and year in
school. What extra information is there for the full membership form? What
comes to mind is (a) weekly availability, e.g. for tabling; (b) major; (c)
primary interest area (corresponding to one of the three committees); and
(d) how they found out about Cal Dems (like is on last year's application -
http://www.caldems.com/docs/membership_spr06.pdf). Is there anything else we
want? Do we want these additional questions to be on the online form, or
just on the printed version we pass out at meetings?
4) Your beautiful faces: We need to get a board picture for the website! In
the meantime, could everyone who hasn't already done so send me a headshot?
5) Committee photos/bios: FYI, Suzanne suggested that we have a page
describing each committee, complete with a photo and bios for members. Yay
making members feel important! Obviously we won't need to worry about the
member info part for a few weeks, but we should settle on some informational
text describing the goals and responsibilities of each committee.
6) Listserv transition: I'll try to do final testing on Mailman soon; if you
get a test message from me, please reply so I know it's working. Then we can
complete the transfer and send a lovely welcome message to everyone which
announces the barbecue and first meeting!
7) General welcome message: Suzanne, how's this for the "welcome to the
website" message? Anything to add/change? I don't think Pam will mind if we
(mostly) co-opt hers. ;)
Welcome to the Cal Berkeley Democrats website! Cal Dems is the official
Democratic club at U.C. Berkeley, and it is our mission to provide college
students with opportunities to engage in meaningful Democratic activism.
We've designed this website to serve as a resource for Young Democrats at
Cal, recent alums, Cal Dems supporters, and Young Dems in the Bay Area. We
hope that you'll check back often for updates on Democratic
events<http://caldems.com/events.php>on campus and in the community.
Take advantage of our online
registration form <http://caldems.com/signup.php> to join Cal Dems. Once
you've joined the group, come to our next
meeting<http://caldems.com/meetings.php>or event and get involved in
something today!
Thanks for visiting our site. And thanks to the members and supporters of
Cal Dems. Your enthusiasm and dedication advances a progressive Democratic
voice that carries far beyond the Cal campus.
Looking forward to an awesome year,
Suzanne Ruecker <suzanne at caldems.com>, President, and the 2006-07 Executive
Board <http://caldems.com/board.php>
See y'all soon!
Nathan
