Cal Dems speak out on Election Day

November 10, 2006

On Election Day, UC Berkeley NewsCenter asked what students cared most about when heading to the polls. Three of the featured respondents are members of Cal Dems! Most commonly mentioned as motivating issues were Prop 85, Prop 87, and Prop 90. Go Bears!

VICTORY!

November 8, 2006

Here at Cal, we've spent the past few months registering thousands of voters, educating students on the issues, and getting out the vote for this critical election. On Tuesday, Americans voted their values and elected Democrats across the nation. To recap a few of the many highlights:

  • Jerry McNerney (CA-11)We hammered the Republicans in the House of Representatives, winning even in places like Iowa and Kansas. Locally, Jerry McNerney emerged victorious against Pombo over in Tracy, netting Democrats a gain of AT LEAST 29 seats and putting Nancy Pelosi in line for the speaker's chair! We also came within points of winning many other contests across the country, and made history by not losing a single Democrat-held seat.
  • John Tester (MT)It was close, but it appears that WE HAVE A SENATE MAJORITY! The 2006 freshman Senate class will include Sherrod Brown (OH), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), Bob Casey (PA), Claire McCaskill (MO), John Tester (MT), and Jim Webb (VA)!
  • Despite the disappointment of Angelides' loss to Schwarzenegger, there was some positive news on the statewide level: Democrats John Garamendi, Debra Bowen, and others will now be in office. There was good news at the statewide level in many other states, as we picked up 6 governorships and several state legislatures.
  • Locally, two Cal Dems-endorsed candidates were reelected: Mayor Tom Bates and City Council member Kriss Worthington. Unfortunately, the student turnout in Jason Overman's district wasn't high enough to propel him to victory, despite heroic efforts by his campaign (and much of the Cal Dems membership).
  • The statewide bond measures passed and arguably the scariest propositions—85 and 90—were narrowly defeated. A South Dakota abortion ban was also voted down; also on the up side, Democrats found support in several states for minimum wage hikes and stem cell research.

Democrats have begun setting the agenda for the next two years, starting with a proposed bipartisan summit on Iraq. In the first hours of Congress, Democrats intend to raise the national minimum wage, enact real ethics reform, pursue energy independence, and halve the interest rates for student loans. Finally, they will put into place the security recommendations of the 9/11 Commission.

Just as our new legislature has much work ahead, so do we. Throughout America, Democrats will continue working hard to lay out and implement a new direction for the country. Will you be with us?

Democratically Yours,

The Cal Dems Executive Board
