Dear Berkeley City Council,
We, the Cal Berkeley Democrats executive board, are writing to notify you of our strong support for the United Student District amendment to the proposed student district.
The passage of Measure R this past November gave rise to a new opportunity to unite the student voice of the city of Berkeley, where one in four residents are students. Since districts were first introduced in 1986, this critical community has been divided into multiple districts, diluting the voices of those who shape the Berkeley we call home.
The co-ops, the residence halls, and the International House are key communities where thousands of students live and work. Including these areas in the new map will ensure that the student district is accurately representative of students, and will underscore Berkeley’s commitment to fairness, equality, and social justice.
For the aforementioned reasons, the Cal Berkeley Democrats executive board strongly supports the United Student District Amendment and we urge your YES vote.
